Spring Fashion Tips from Great Stuff

It’s officially Spring and it’s time to put away the chunky sweaters and boots and bring out the Spring dresses and sandals. Spring 2013 promises to be a great one for fashion. We searched through all the top fashion magazines and blogs and put together a list of some of the top trends this Spring. You can find many of these items at Great Stuff…and for a lot less than you will at the department stores.

2013 Spring Trends:

  • The prominent color of Spring is green—including a wide range from sour apple green and midori to the blue-greens of cool mint and beach glass.
  • Iridescent accents on skirts, tops, colored trenches and accessories. To achieve this look experiment with pastel color palettes and shades of silver.
  • Focus on easy-breezy pieces that fall away from the body with a totally relaxed feeling. Mix dynamic bright colors with neutrals to achieve a balance.
  • Self expression is another way to wear this season’s colors. Every woman should have an embroidered jacket and some colorful tees in their wardrobe for Spring.
  • Graphic prints were big on the runway this season. From bold patterns to funky animal print, you’re sure to make a statement. Balance it out with some neutral accessories.
  • All white was big on the runways as well with structured white dresses and skirts. Have some fun with cutout dresses or sheer pieces.
  • Denim never goes out of style. Throw on a cute denim jacket or find an oversized denim shirt to wear as a tunic belted at the waist.

Accessory Trend Report:

  • For necklaces, the chunkier, the better this season! Find some heavy beaded necklaces and pair them with simple tops for a bold statement.
  • Gypsy-like jewelry is also big this season. Lots of colorful beaded necklaces that can be layered and paired with fun, dangling earrings.
  • Tote bags are back in season! Find a structured tote bag with a cool pattern to carry around this Spring.
  • For sunglasses, it’s all about the statement. Find sunglasses that oversized or come in bright colors.

Great Stuff wins "Best of Delaware" and Looks to Fall Fashions

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition is very pleased to announce that its resale shop, Great Stuff Savvy Resale, was named “Best Resale Shop” by Delaware Today Magazine in their annual “Best of Delaware” issue.  The resale shop opened in October of 2010 and is located in North Wilmington in the Talleyville Center on Concord Pike.
“We are so thrilled to receive this honor,” said general manager Dale Maahs.  “We’ve only been in business for just shy of two years and the support that we have received is phenomenal.”  Maahs is joined by her assistant manager Trish Tompkins and over 50 volunteers who work in the shop.  “The volunteers at Great Stuff are the best.  They are such an important piece of the success of the shop.  They provide excellent customer service and help with tasks like window displays, tagging items, merchandising, and more. They are such a strong team.”  Many Great Stuff volunteers are breast cancer survivors themselves and often lend a compassionate ear to those somehow impacted by breast cancer.

A few members of the Great Stuff team attended the Best of Delaware Party on July 26 at Dover Downs where they joined some of the best businesses in Delaware.  This event provided Great Stuff with an opportunity to introduce new people to the resale shop and let them know how they can help.  “We are always looking for donations of gently used upscale clothing, handbags and accessories, footwear, home accents and furniture,” said Maahs.  Click here for a donation flyer with more information on how to donate to Great Stuff.
By donating items or shopping at Great Stuff, you can make an impact on the local fight against breast cancer.  “All of our net proceeds benefit DBCC’s local programs and services.  Everything stays right here in the community.”  Last year, Great Stuff presented DBCC with a check for $40,000 in its first year of business.

The resale shop has also started a fun private shopping experience, Sip & Shops.  Great Stuff hosts these events either after regular shop hours or during the lunch hour.  A host will invite her friends to attend a fun private shopping event. Great Stuff provides some light fare and refreshments and volunteers who can help attendees put together great outfits.  Recently, Great Stuff held Sip & Shop events with the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce, the Mamie Warren Senior Center and Chase Manhattan Bank.  The staff at Great Stuff will help you to plan your private, exclusive shopping event.  If you are interested in hosting a Sip & Shop, click here for more information.
Great Stuff is now transitioning from summer to fall clothing and the shop is now accepting fall donations.  For more information about Great Stuff, please visit www.greatstuffresale.com.

Born to Stand Out with Great Stuff Savvy Resale

By Marissa Chieco

Your clothes make a statement about who you are, so don’t be afraid to show off and stand out. DBCC’s Great Stuff Savvy Resale Shop is an amazing way to stay at the forefront of the fashion trends this season, without breaking the piggy bank. Here are some fashion trends for spring. All of the looks you see here are from Great Stuff!
Mint green is the break out color of the season. Different shades of this have been popping out everywhere. Pair a mint green dress with some heels and a blazer, or spice up that little black dress with accessories in this color.
The dark days are over. Replace those drab colors with neon. Bright blues, yellows, greens, oranges, and hot pinks can spice up every outfit.

Nothing could ever replace that little black dress. This season the red carpet was filled with black and white outfits that defy time. Stock up on these, and you’ll be ready for all occasions.

Don’t be afraid to play with bold prints. You could never go wrong with a bright floral piece that brightens up your closet.

Play with nautical stripes and tribal prints paired with a classic pair of jeans. Good for a casual day out, or dress it up with a pair of heels and a small black clutch for a casual evening look.

Lace is everywhere this season. Add lace into your outfit through your accessories. Find lace covered shoes or handbags, or instead wear a lace shirt, dress, or pair of leggings. This edgy, yet feminine look is great on everyone.
Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Moss have adopted the oversized hats. This practical yet trendy piece is perfect for those long days at the beach or a day at the park with the family. Definitely a summer must have.
DBCC’s Great Stuff Savvy Resale Shop is the perfect place to fill out your wardrobe while helping a great cause. Great Stuff: Celebrating One-Year in Business!

Some of the Great Stuff volunteers

A year and a half ago, an old lighting shop sat vacant in the Talleyville Center on Route 202.  Today, an upscale resale boutique, Great Stuff, is decorated with pink stripes and attracts customers who like to “shop for a cause.”  On October 20, 2011, Great Stuff celebrated its one-year anniversary!  The shop, which carries women’s clothing, accessories, and home furnishings, had a very successful first year in business.

Great Stuff store manager, Dale Maahs, says that the shop has exceeded everyone’s expectations.  Dale explains that there were some concerns with the shop, especially with recruiting enough volunteers and donations to keep the shop going strong.  “That has not been a problem,” Dale explains.  “The donations have been rolling in every day and we have a great core of over 30 wonderful volunteers.”

Dale with a happy customer

Unlike your average consignment shop, Great Stuff thrives solely on donated items and is staffed by Maahs, an assistant manager, and trained volunteers.  “The volunteers are fabulous.  Many were customers first and saw how much fun the volunteers were having and wanted to join them.  Others have a connection to breast cancer and want to give back.”  Dale explains that many survivors on her volunteer staff are able to share their stories with each other and build camaraderie.  A group of volunteers from Great Stuff recently got together and created a team for the Inaugural Race for the Pink Ribbon 5K which benefited DBCC.

The volunteers help with taking in donations and pricing them, working on the sales floor and helping in the backroom.  “The quality of donations that we get is amazing.  So many are in pristine condition, some with the tags still on, and we get a wide range of brands and designers,” Dale said. “We are so thankful for the support of the community with donations and volunteers.  We even have support from other local retailers for in-kind services and some donated items.”

The shop has been a great fundraising arm for DBCC, but has also provided a great source of outreach to the community.  “The visibility that the shop has given DBCC in the community has been wonderful,” DBCC Executive Director Vicky Cooke said.  “It is a place where survivors can volunteer and talk with other survivors and those newly diagnosed in the community.”  Maahs agrees, “We have such a great family here.  Customers always say ‘Wow!’ when they learn that the proceeds from the shop benefit DBCC.  People come in and thank us all the time and tell us that we are so needed in the community. Customers want to help and be a part of it. They become regular shoppers and donors, and refer their friends to the shop.”
